How to Prevent Traumatic Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) occur when a person’s brain is violently shaken in one’s skull or when an object penetrates the skull and causes damage to the brain’s cells.
This can occur from a wide variety of personal injury incidents including:
- Falls – which cause more than 35% of all traumatic brain injuries
- Auto accidents – which are responsible for over 17% of traumatic brain injuries
- Direct impacts to the head – 16.5%
- Criminal assault – 10%
- Undisclosed or unknown – 21%
Preventing a TBI
Since there are many ways someone can suffer a traumatic injury, prevention is just as varied. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are some common sense and medically proven methods that will either completely prevent or greatly reduce the severity of unavoidable traumatic brain injuries.
If you are riding in a car make sure to have your seat belt on and make sure it is working to adequately restrain you and all passengers in your vehicle. Never drive under the influence of alcohol, prescription medication, or illicit drugs. Drive defensively by making sure to look out for drivers with erratic behavior and always plan on where to turn off to avoid an accident.
Wearing a helmet will reduce your chances of suffering a traumatic brain injury or will at least reduce the severity if you do sustain one.
Wherever you live or if you are going out to another person’s home, there are some things to look out for to prevent traumatic brain injuries. Make sure you don’t trip and fall on rugs or clutter than can cause brain trauma. Faulty stairways and lighting can also lead to a fall, slip, or damage from poorly designed or installed products or lighting.
While there are many ways to prevent and mitigate traumatic brain injuries that all too often affect all demographics and segments of our state residents, when a traumatic brain injury is caused by an at-fault party, the damages are much more poignant. Suffering a traumatic brain injury can cause life-long damages that require medical attention from doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. If the damages are that serious, costly, and emotionally draining around the clock medical supervision might be necessary.
