A seizure occurs when nerve cells are fired suddenly and quickly. You may experience this immediately after your accident or within the first 24 hours of being injured. These are referred to as early onset seizures.
Late seizures can occur days, weeks or even a year after sustaining a traumatic brain injury. When they continue to happen, this is known as a seizure disorder. It is more likely to be an ongoing problem if the individual experienced seizures early on after an accident.
Types of Seizures
There are different types of seizures that can be experienced. For instance, instead of the whole brain being impacted, a partial seizure affects a particular area. There may or may not be shaking and the individual may or may not lose consciousness.
The affects of this type of seizure will depend on the exact location of the brain it is occurring in and may include the following symptoms:
- uncontrollable crying/outbursts;
- sense of smell or taste is altered;
- twitching in the arms, hands, leg or face;
- numbness or tingling; and
- dizziness.
