Most people are probably more familiar with another type of seizure, known as a grand mal seizure. This type begins in a part of the brain but then spreads. Although convulsions are generally experienced, it is not the case for everyone.
Some of the symptoms of a grand mal seizure include:
- person is disconnected from those around them;
- violent shaking of the head, neck, arms and legs (convulsion); and
- loss of consciousness.
It usually appears that the person experiencing the seizure has no sense of what is going on around them. They may have a blank look on their face and will not be able to respond to others.
In order to diagnose a seizure disorder, you will need to undergo an electroencephalogram (EEG). This measures the brain’s electrical activity for abnormalities. However, unless you are experiencing a seizure at the time, it may indicate that everything is normal.
If the results are normal but the doctor still suspects you have a seizure disorder then you may have to undergo a 24-hour EEG. This, along with questions the doctor may ask can usually help determine if you have the condition.
Treatment usually includes medication but may also require surgery. The effects of a seizure disorder can be life-altering, even affecting an individual’s ability to continue working.
