Car Crash Kills Gwinnett County Family

An Atlanta family of five was killed in a North Carolina bad weather car wreck.

The tragic car crash occurred on Thursday, September 30 on Route 64 in Creswell, North Carolina.  Twenty-seven-year-old Daniel Alvarez, his wife, Natalie Owens, 27, and a child, Ariela Alvarez, 1, died when the Jeep Grand Cherokee they were driving struck standing water on the road and hydroplaned into a ditch, and overturned.

Three-year-old twins Ezekiel and Zacharia Alvarez survived the fatal accident and were treated at a hospital in Greenville, North Carolina.  Zacharia died at the hospital and Ezekiel died the next day.

The family of five was returning home to Atlanta after an annual religious retreat.

Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water forms between the tires of a vehicle and the road surface.  This leads to a loss of traction that prevents the vehicle from responding to steering, braking, or other efforts to control its movement.

To prevent hydroplaning:

• Avoid driving through large puddles as it is difficult to gauge the depth of standing water.
• When it is raining, allow extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
• Oily roads become extra slick when wet. Use extra caution when traveling on busy highways.
