Preventing Georgia DUI Crashes There S an App for That

You sat down to watch the Super Bowl. You weren’t intending to drink, but, after a few beers, you realized you couldn’t safely drive home. Your friends have had at least as much to drink. What do you do?
There’s a new smartphone application to help you out. “Drive Sober Georgia,” an app for iPhone and Android devices, was created by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety in an effort to reduce drunk driving in Georgia. The app lists safe ride programs available in Atlanta and throughout Georgia. Those without a smartphone can access the list at drivesobergeorgia.org.
Some of the programs are free and operate only on New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl Sunday. Others, like SafeRide America, charge a small fee and operate every day.
The app is easy to use and may have already saved lives. It was downloaded by nearly 1,000 users before New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve has one of the highest rates of drunk driving of the year.
Simply remember to use the app before getting in your car. Texting or operating a smartphone while driving can be just as deadly as driving drunk.
An app can’t prevent all Georgia drunk-driving accidents. Unfortunately, there are many people who choose to drive drunk despite other options.
