A Doraville police detective is dead after a wrong-way accident on I-20. The driver who caused the Dekalb County car crash was intoxicated. He had a history of DUI, including two arrests for Georgia DUI.
The accident occurred on Monday, November 14 at about 2:30 a.m. Twenty-seven-year-old Robert Shane Wilson was driving west in an unmarked police SUV. He was on his way to help with a home invasion call in Doraville when a jeep headed east in the westbound lane crashed head-on into his SUV. Detective Wilson died at the scene.
The wrong-way driver, 39-year-old Gene Jones of Dunwoody, sustained minor injuries. He was taken to Grady Hospital and was later charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and with driving under the influence. This was not Jones’s first DUI offense. Prior charges include two DUIs, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, and assault.
Detective Wilson had been a member of the Doraville police department since the age of 19. He started as a dispatcher, became a patrol officer, and was only recently promoted to detective. He is survived by his wife and young son. We would like to express our sympathy for the tragic loss experienced by the Wilson family.
