Witnesses Report Swerving Truck—Driver Arrested for DUI

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2,597 people were killed in United States traffic accidents in December 2010. Of those, 775 deaths involved alcohol-impaired drivers. A 2006 study by the NHTSA estimated that there is one drunk driving fatality in the United States every 30 minutes.

Coweta County's Driving Under the Influence Laws are complex. Coweta County DUI injury attorney Shane Smith can sort through the intermingled laws that potentially create complications in a DUI case.

Multiple witnesses recently reported a swerving tractor trailer on Interstate 20 in Coweta County. The truck was pulled over by police before it caused an accident or hurt anyone. Police reportedly smelled alcohol on the driver's breath though the driver claimed he had not had a drink in several days. The driver failed several field sobriety tests and blew a 0.22 percent blood alcohol content (BAC) on a Breathalyzer, well over twice the legal limit for a truck driver. Further inspection revealed an empty can of Mike's Hard Lemonade in the truck's cabin.

According to the Coweta County Department of Transportation (GDOT), 29 percent of Coweta County auto accidents involve alcohol or drugs. Mothers Against Drunk Driving reports that approximately one of every three vehicular fatalities involves drunk driving. On average drunk driving kills someone in America every hour. Every 90 seconds someone is injured due to drunk driving.
