A one-vehicle crash on June 16, 2012, on County Line Road has left a 16-year-old girl dead and another teenager charged in her death, Columbus police said Saturday.
The teen who died was identified as a rising senior at Northside High School, said Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower. She was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m. Saturday at The Medical Center, almost two hours after the 11:13 p.m. accident. Thrower said she died from injuries sustained in the crash but an autopsy will be conducted at the crime lab in Atlanta to confirm the exact cause of death.
The teen's mother is still looking for answers.
"I don't know anything," she said late Saturday. "I need to know what happened."
The deceased was a passenger in a 2006 Toyota Scion driven by another Northside High School student, police said in an incident report. The driver is being held without bond in the Muscogee County Jail on a felony homicide by vehicle charge for a 9 a.m. Monday hearing in Recorder's Court.
The driver also faces multiple related charges. He has been charged with one count each of driving under the influence, minor in possession of alcohol, having an open container, improper lane change, and two counts of not wearing a seat belt in connection with the accident at Randall Wood Drive.
According to a posting on Facebook, both teens attended Northside and were in a relationship. The driver is also a rising senior.
The accident occurred just days after a resident voiced concerns about driving on County Line Road, a road with sharp curves and hills going east from Manchester Expressway.
