FMCSA Semi-Truck Safety Tips for Pedestrians

Large trucks are capable of causing tremendous damage and serious injury when they are involved in accidents. Semis can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds and can often travel at speeds of 70 miles per hour or more. If a tractor-trailer is involved in a collision with a pedestrian, the results could be devastating.  When these accidents are the result of truck driver or trucking company negligence victims may be able to recover by bringing a personal injury claim. The best way to ensure that you receive the compensation you deserve after a Georgia semi-truck accident is to consult with one of our experienced truck accident attorneys as soon as possible after an accident. It is important to remember that there is a limited amount of time in which a person may bring a claim, so any delay may jeopardize your ability to recover.

Fortunately for pedestrians who walk within in areas in which there are semi-trucks, there are certain steps that can reduce one’s risk of being involved in an accident. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) pedestrians should observe the following safety tips while walking from one place to another:

  • Use Walkways and Pay Attention – Whenever possible, stay in areas that are designated for pedestrian use.  In addition, make sure to pay attention to all traffic signals and keep a safe distance from the curb, especially at street corners.
  • Be Aware of “No-Zones” – Be aware of and avoid a truck’s blind spots, and always assume that a truck driver cannot see you.
  • Account for Stopping Distances – Semis and other large trucks generally have much longer stopping distance than passenger vehicles. When considering crossing the street, make sure to always err on the side of caution when considering oncoming traffic.
  • Make Yourself Visible – Make sure that you are as visible as possible to truck drivers and other motorists. When walking at night, wear retro-reflective clothing or carry a flashlight so that other drivers can more easily see you.
  • Look out for Wide Loads – Trucks carrying wide loads are often less maneuverable and take up more space than other vehicles. Make sure to be extremely careful around trucks carrying wide loads and keep as much distance between you and them as possible.
