On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, a collision occurred that left one person dead in Gwinnett County. This Norcross car accident involved a train and two cars and took place around 4:55 p.m. near Buford Highway in Peachtree Corners.
According to Gwinnett County Police, the initial event in this tragedy was a car accident between two vehicles. The accident caused one of the vehicles to make an uncontrolled stop on the railroad tracks, where a train struck it. One vehicle burst into flames, one person was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, and one person was killed at the accident scene.
The man killed was identified as 51-year-old Tony Lungaro of Lawrenceville. Gwinnett Police spokesman Cpl, Jake Smith said that Lungaro died after being struck by the train. He was a passenger in a white 2003 Ford 150 that was involved in a two-car accident.
Prior to the train crash, the Ford, driven by 40-year-old Lorenzo Wilkerson, was traveling south on Buford Highway as a 2003 Chevrolet Astrovan, driven by 25-year-old Severin Gluschak, was heading north. Police said that it appears that Gluschak attempted to make a left turn onto Amwiler Road but failed to yield. The Astrovan made the turn in front of the Ford, which caused the two-vehicle collision.
Upon impact, the Ford ended up stopping on the railroad tracks. Lungaro got out of the Ford pickup and approached the driver’s side of the truck. Police believe that Lungaro was possibly attempting to help Wilkerson; however, Lungaro was struck by the train and killed immediately. When the train crashed into the Ford, the pickup caught on fire. Wilkerson was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and Gluschak was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
No charges have been made at this time as an investigation is still ongoing.
Shane Smith Law would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Lungaro, and we would like to wish Mr. Wilkerson and Mr. Gluschak a complete recovery.
