Five Sent to Hospital After Train & Semi Crash in Coweta County

A family of five survived a wreck with a train that occurred on Wednesday, August 14, 2013. This train and semi-truck crash in Coweta County took place around 5:00 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 29 North and Ga. Highway 154.

The semi-truck was heading west toward U.S. Highway 29 when it was struck by the train. As a result, the truck was pushed about 300 feet and into a ditch, and the train continued on for about a quarter-mile before it came to a complete stop.

The family of five, which included two adults and three children, was in the semi-trailer, at the time of the crash. According to the Coweta County Fire Department, they found the family of five still in the truck when they arrived at the accident scene. With the help of a hydraulic tool, the firefighters freed the family by removing part of a seat in the semi.

While none of the family members suffered life-threatening injuries, the driver of the truck sustained a possible broken leg and was transported to Grady Hospital in Atlanta for medical care. The other adult and three children did not report any injuries, but they were transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston to get checked out.

There were three employees on board the CSX train at the time of the crash, but none of them reported any injuries or needed medical attention. Amazingly, the train did not have any leaks or hazardous materials spills as a result of the crash.

The wife of the truck driver told the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office they believe the brakes malfunctioned; however, authorities are still investigating the cause of this crash.

Shane Smith Law would like to wish everyone involved in this wreck a full and fast recovery.
